Winslow Homer Lecture Series: Croquet Scenes
Morristown, NJ
July 01, 2012 at 2:00 pm

To complement the exhibition, On Vacation with Winslow Homer: Wood Engravings of an American Master, the Morris Museum is pleased to present a three-part lecture series.

Lecture 3: Homer’s Croquet Scenes

Sunday, July 1 at 2:00 PM

As the national interest in physical fitness and leisure sports grew in the nineteenth century, croquet became increasingly popular with women.  While some commentators endorsed croquet as a socially approved physical activity for women who had few other opportunities to exercise outdoors, it also came under a moral cloud.  This lecture will explore the subtle social ambiguities captured in Homer’s paintings, sketches and drawings of croquet scenes.

Tickets for all three lectures: $40 (museum members $25)

Single tickets: $10/lecture (museum members: $10)
